Melissa Sloan, a 45-year-old mom from Wales, has spent the past decade transforming her body into a canvas, collecting over 800 tattoos in total. Her passion for body art is evident in her commitment to adding around three new tattoos each week. Though her tattoos have become a defining part of her identity, they have also led to significant challenges in her personal and professional life.
Facing Discrimination and Employment Struggles
Despite her love for tattoos, Melissa has found it difficult to secure employment, often facing judgment and exclusion due to her appearance. She explained that when she applies for jobs, employers often look at her in disbelief, as if she is not human. This has led her to struggle with job prospects for over 20 years. Melissa is eager to work and is open to any opportunity, even jobs like cleaning toilets, but her unique look has been a major barrier.
In addition to job rejections, Melissa has also experienced exclusion from certain tattoo parlours, many of which refuse to tattoo her face due to her extensive ink. This has led her to take matters into her own hands, doing some of her tattoos at home with the help of her partner.
Exclusion from Social Events
The challenges Melissa faces aren’t limited to work. She has also been excluded from social events, including local pubs and her children’s school functions. Melissa shared that on one occasion, she was told to stand outside and watch her child’s nativity play through a window because of her tattoos. Additionally, she has been refused entry to Christmas parties and has been left out of other social gatherings.
These experiences have highlighted the social stigma surrounding heavily tattooed individuals, particularly women, and the way they are often treated as outsiders in mainstream settings.
A Growing Addiction to Tattoos
For Melissa, tattoos have become an obsession. She described her passion for body art as addictive, with each new design building on the last. Despite the costs and barriers she faces, Melissa finds joy in her tattoos, viewing them as a form of self-expression. Her dedication to her art has led her to amass an impressive collection of ink, with her face alone containing around 100 tattoos.
With each tattoo, Melissa’s desire to keep adding to her collection grows, and she has expressed a goal of eventually becoming the world’s most tattooed individual. Her aspirations include gaining recognition in the Guinness World Records, where she hopes to secure the title of the “most tattooed person.”
