At the age of 64, Campbell has transformed an old airplane into a unique living space, showcasing his inventive spirit. This remarkable venture began when, in his early twenties, he invested $23,000 in 10 acres of woodland in Oregon, setting the stage for his unconventional home.
Unveiling an Ingenious Concept
Driven by a lifelong passion for reimagining everyday objects, Campbell envisioned a home like no other—crafted from retired cargo planes. His inspiration came from Joanne Ussery, who famously converted a Boeing 727 into a livable space. Motivated by this idea, Campbell decided to bring his own version of this innovative adaptation to life.
The Boeing 727 Transformation
In 1999, Campbell took the plunge by purchasing a Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways, investing $100,000 in the aircraft. The logistical challenge of transporting the plane from Greece to Oregon added another $120,000 to his expenses, bringing the total investment to $220,000. Despite the significant costs, Campbell was convinced that the project was well worth it.
Revealing the Interior
Inside the airplane, Campbell has preserved some of the original features, including seats and a bathroom, while adding essential amenities such as a sink and a washing machine. The interior of the plane, though simple, is a testament to Campbell’s resourcefulness and creativity.

Although the Boeing 727 offers ample space, Campbell leads a minimalist lifestyle within his unconventional home. He spends limited time inside, with a couch serving as his bed and basic appliances making up his kitchen. His diet is equally simple, consisting primarily of cereal and canned goods.
