Nurse Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven infants who were under her care in a neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. At 33 years old, Letby has been identified as the most significant baby killer in modern British history.
Additional Charges and Legal Proceedings
In addition to the seven murder convictions, Letby has been found guilty of attempting to murder six other infants. She was acquitted of two attempted murder charges, and the jury was unable to reach a decision on six additional charges of attempted murder. The lead consultant of the neonatal unit at the hospital indicated to the BBC that the hospital was unable to investigate the allegations against Letby effectively. Consequently, the government has mandated an independent inquiry to address the case.
Ongoing Reviews and Investigations
Authorities are currently reviewing the records of approximately 4,000 infants admitted to the hospitals where Letby worked. However, they have clarified that this review does not imply an investigation into all 4,000 cases.
