Elvis Presley was more than just a legendary musician; he was a fashion icon and a man of distinct tastes. One of the most fascinating aspects of his personal life was his private jet, a 1962 Lockheed Jetstar. Purchased in 1962, Elvis’ plane was a reflection of his luxurious lifestyle and unique personality. It was tailored to meet his specific preferences, from the lavish interior to the amenities that catered to his every need during long flights.

    Luxury in the Skies

The moment you step inside Elvis’ private jet, it’s clear that comfort and opulence were top priorities. The interior was customized with mahogany paneling and plush crimson velvet chairs. These choices weren’t just about aesthetics—they highlighted the King of Rock’s affinity for grandeur. The jet was a mobile extension of his lavish lifestyle, providing him with a space to relax while traveling across the country. The seating was high-quality, offering plenty of room for Elvis and his entourage, making it an ideal retreat for both work and leisure.

    The Plane’s Storied History

For nearly three decades, Elvis flew in the Lockheed Jetstar, using it to travel for performances and personal trips. After his death in 1977, the plane was placed on display as a tourist attraction near Roswell, New Mexico. The years spent on display didn’t take much of a toll on the aircraft, which remains surprisingly well-preserved, despite its age. Visitors to Roswell could view the jet, experiencing a piece of rock-and-roll history up close.

The Famed Elvis Sandwich and Microwave

One of the plane’s most intriguing features is the tiny kitchen located at the rear of the cabin. It’s here that Elvis would prepare his infamous sandwich, which combined peanut butter, mayonnaise, crispy bacon, and banana. The kitchen even included a microwave, which—considering its age—probably no longer works. Yet, it’s easy to imagine Elvis, with his love for comfort food, preparing his signature snack while flying in his custom jet. The space wasn’t just about luxury; it was also about catering to the everyday tastes and habits that defined the man.

    Recent Auction Sale

After decades of being on display, Elvis’ iconic plane was sold at auction in January 2025 for $260,000 at the Mecum Kissimmee Collector Car Auction in Florida. The new owner placed an anonymous phone bid, and the plane has since found a new home. The fact that this piece of rock-and-roll history was still able to attract such interest speaks volumes about the lasting legacy of Elvis Presley. For those who admire him, owning a part of his history is a rare and valuable opportunity.

In the end, Elvis Presley’s jet was not just a mode of transportation; it was an embodiment of his larger-than-life personality. It combined luxury, personal comfort, and a touch of whimsy, perfectly representing the King of Rock’s unique taste and flair. Even though the plane has changed hands, it will always remain a symbol of Elvis’ iconic legacy.
