Patti Scialfa, the talented singer and guitarist of the E Street Band, and wife of legendary musician Bruce Springsteen, has recently shared a deeply personal and emotional revelation. In the documentary Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Patti disclosed that she has been battling multiple myeloma, a type of cancer, since 2018. This revelation has brought attention to the difficulties she’s faced, particularly in relation to her career and health.
Impact on Touring and Performance
Due to the effects of multiple myeloma on her immune system, Patti has had to make the difficult choice to step back from her full-time touring commitments with the E Street Band. “This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful about what I engage in and the places I choose to visit,” she shared with viewers in the documentary. However, Patti has not completely stepped away from the stage. She continues to occasionally join the band for select performances, where she sings a few songs. These appearances, though rare, remain special moments for both Patti and her fans. “Now and then, I manage to join a show and sing a couple of songs on stage with the band, which is a delightful experience. This is my new normal, and I’m coming to terms with it,” Patti explained, showing grace and resilience as she adapts to her new reality.
Focusing on Family and Solo Music Projects
In a previous interview with the Asbury Park Press, Patti also discussed her decision to participate in only a few shows during Bruce Springsteen’s 2023 tour. This decision stemmed not only from health concerns but also from her desire to spend time with her newborn granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, born in July 2022. Additionally, Patti has been focusing on her own music, dedicating time to work on her solo album. “With a lot of talented musicians in the current lineup, I felt my presence wasn’t as crucial,” Patti remarked, acknowledging that she didn’t feel her contributions were indispensable during the tour. “I performed at the first few gigs, and observing how everything was coming together beautifully, I realized I wasn’t contributing anything particularly unique. It was important for me to seize the moment to work on my own album,” she explained.
Bruce Springsteen’s Health Challenges
Patti’s health struggles have not been the only challenge the Springsteen family has faced. In September 2023, Bruce Springsteen had to postpone his remaining tour dates due to ongoing treatment for peptic ulcer disease. Later in 2024, he also experienced a brief postponement of tour dates because of vocal issues. Throughout these health setbacks, Patti and Bruce have faced adversity together, supporting one another through difficult times.
Resilience and Strength in the Face of Adversity
Despite the significant health challenges both Patti and Bruce have encountered, Patti remains a symbol of strength, resilience, and grace. Her ability to confront her illness openly and adjust her career priorities to focus on her health and family speaks to her determination and courage. To her fans, Patti represents the power of vulnerability and the importance of embracing life’s changes with grace. As she continues her battle with multiple myeloma, my thoughts and prayers are with Patti Scialfa, wishing her continued strength and health in the face of these challenges.
