Going Above and Beyond for Inclusion
Ms. Helma’s commitment to her students was profoundly demonstrated when she worked tirelessly to include 10-year-old Maggie Vazquez, who has cerebral palsy, in a two-day hiking trip to Camp Sullivan. Despite the logistical challenges of accommodating Maggie on a physically demanding trip, Ms. Helma’s determination never wavered.
After exploring various solutions, Ms. Helma discovered a carrier called the Freeloader, specifically designed for taller children like Maggie. She purchased the $300 carrier to ensure Maggie could fully participate in the adventure.
A Memorable Adventure
From May 30 to June 1, Ms. Helma, along with around 50 fourth-grade students and 10 school staff members, embarked on a memorable journey. Throughout the trip, Ms. Helma carried Maggie on her back, navigating through challenging terrains. Maggie’s enthusiasm and resilience inspired Ms. Helma, making the experience both inclusive and unforgettable for everyone involved.

Maggie’s mother, Michelle Vazquez, expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging that Ms. Helma went “way above and beyond” to create unique experiences for her daughter. Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, the school’s executive director, praised Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination.”
