Zoe had always viewed her mother-in-law, Denise, as a bit overbearing. She wasn’t necessarily malicious, but she certainly had a commanding presence that made others feel as though they were walking on eggshells around her. Denise had become even more assertive after the passing of her husband, Jeremy, a few years ago. Her role as head librarian of the local library had allowed her to take charge of her time, even making the decision to hold her book club meetings at the library itself. Despite her authoritative manner, Zoe didn’t think much of it, believing that Denise’s involvement in her grandson Leo’s life was simply out of love and concern. After all, Denise was more than willing to babysit Leo when Zoe had work shifts at the hospital, often stepping in when her husband Andrew was busy with his law firm.
However, as time passed, Zoe started noticing subtle changes in Leo’s behavior whenever Denise came over. It started with small signs: Leo clinging to her leg longer than usual, or hiding when he heard Denise’s car pull into the driveway. Zoe dismissed these actions as just a phase, something she had seen in other children, especially those who struggled with separation anxiety. But things began to take a more troubling turn.
An Unexpected Outburst

One evening, as Zoe was preparing to leave for a night shift, Leo suddenly burst into tears. “I don’t want Grandma to stay with me!” he cried, gripping Zoe’s scrub with a force that surprised her. She knelt down beside him, trying to comfort him while asking, “But why, sweetheart?” Leo responded, his voice shaky, “Because… Grandma acts strange.” The words sent a wave of concern through Zoe, but before she could inquire further, the sound of Denise’s footsteps echoed down the hall, and Leo fled to his room in distress. Denise appeared at the doorway, asking about Leo’s whereabouts, but Zoe quickly covered for him, saying that he had gone to play in his room.
Despite trying to push it from her mind, Zoe couldn’t shake the unease she felt. She spent the entire night at the hospital, caring for patients but unable to stop thinking about Leo’s unsettling words. What could he have meant by “Grandma acts strange”?
Signs of Distress the Next Morning

When Zoe returned home the next morning, she found Leo sitting on the couch, his eyes red and puffy, as though he had spent the entire night crying. His favorite cartoons were playing on the TV, but he wasn’t watching. Concerned, Zoe asked if he had slept, to which Leo quietly responded, “No, Mommy, I stayed up. I didn’t want to sleep.” Zoe wrapped him in a blanket, hoping it would make him feel secure enough to share what was troubling him. After a moment, Leo confided in her, “Because Grandma scares me.”
Zoe’s heart sank as she heard those words. She tried to calm him down, asking what had happened. Leo explained that Denise had been chasing him with something, and it terrified him. “She keeps trying to put something into my mouth,” Leo said. “It’s scary.” Zoe’s anxiety deepened as she pressed him for more details, but she couldn’t have anticipated what he would say next.
Leo’s Terrifying Revelation

Leo hesitated for a moment before speaking, and when he did, the words were chilling. “Cotton buds,” he said. “You know, what you clean my ears with? She said that she wants to put my spit in the tube. I don’t like it. I don’t want it.” Zoe’s blood ran cold. She couldn’t fathom why Denise would be attempting to put a cotton swab into Leo’s mouth, especially given his recent trauma after an accident that resulted in a broken arm. Since that incident, Leo had developed a fear of anything remotely related to doctors or medical procedures, and the thought of Denise forcing him to undergo something that resembled a DNA test was horrifying.
The more Zoe thought about it, the angrier and more confused she became. Why would Denise, who had always presented herself as a loving grandmother, behave in such a disturbing way? Why was she trying to get Leo to take a DNA test? This wasn’t just a case of a child being uncomfortable around a family member—there was something deeper at play.
Confronting the Unthinkable

Zoe could no longer ignore her growing concern. She needed answers. The thought of Denise attempting to conduct any kind of medical procedure on Leo without her knowledge or consent filled her with a sense of dread. Zoe’s protective instincts kicked in as she turned to Leo and asked, “Where’s Grandma?” The question lingered in the air, as Zoe prepared herself for a confrontation with Denise. What would she find? And, more importantly, what had been her true intentions all along?
