Melanie Hamrick, the 37-year-old girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, is unconcerned with the 44-year age gap between them. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Hamrick discussed her relationship with the 81-year-old rock icon and how she chooses to ignore the opinions of others regarding their age difference.
“I don’t think about it,” she stated when asked about the age gap. “Everyone’s going to have their opinion. If you think about others’ opinions, no matter where you are in life, you’re going to have a problem and you’re going to analyze it.”
Hamrick explained her approach to these external opinions by focusing on her own happiness and the well-being of those around her. “I put the blinders on. Am I happy? Yes. Are the people in my life happy? Yes. Am I hurting anyone? No. OK, they can mind their own business.” This mindset reflects her determination to live her life on her own terms, without being influenced by outsiders.
A Love That Began at a Rolling Stones Concert
Hamrick and Jagger’s relationship began in 2014, after they met at a Rolling Stones concert in Tokyo. At the time, Hamrick was 26, and she was far from starstruck by meeting the legendary musician. Reflecting on the encounter, she mentioned, “Ballet dancers meet some of the biggest stars and act, like, ‘Who are you?’ Because, to us, ballet dancers are the gods. That’s who you study and look up to. You’re so in your world.”
This comment sheds light on Hamrick’s background as a former ballerina, where her focus and admiration were directed toward the world of ballet rather than the celebrity culture surrounding Jagger. It highlights a sense of independence and self-assurance that Hamrick has maintained throughout her relationship with the iconic rock star.
Becoming a Mother and Leaving Her Dancing Career
In 2016, Hamrick and Jagger welcomed their first child, a son named Deveraux. Hamrick shared her love for her newborn son on social media, saying, “I’m so in love with my baby Deveraux Jagger.” Her life as a mother significantly impacted her career, leading her to retire from the American Ballet Theatre in 2019.
As a mother, she found it challenging to juggle the demanding schedule of a ballet dancer and her responsibilities as a parent. “The schedule of A.B.T. is great, but it’s hard when you have a child and the life I have now,” Hamrick explained in an interview with The New York Times. She revealed how, at times, she felt torn between her passion for dance and her role as a mother. “I feel like superwoman some days, and other days I feel like I’m just keeping my head above water, not fully present in being a dancer — going to rehearsal and not giving it my all. That’s not fair. I love it. But sometimes my head is not there. And I’ve done enough ‘Swan Lakes.’ It’s OK.”
Supporting Each Other’s Career
Despite stepping away from ballet, Hamrick has continued to pursue other ventures. Last year, she published her debut novel, First Position, showcasing her creative talents beyond dance. In her personal life, Hamrick emphasized the mutual support she and Jagger have for each other’s careers. She remarked in a Today show appearance that they are “very supportive of each other’s ventures and work,” adding that she is “not just someone’s partner.”
This statement illustrates the strength of their relationship, built on mutual respect and understanding, with both individuals pursuing their respective goals while maintaining a supportive partnership.
Jagger’s Past Relationships and Family
Jagger’s romantic history is notable, having been in a relationship with fashion designer L’Wren Scott from 2001 until her tragic passing in 2014. The Rolling Stones legend also has seven other children from previous relationships. Despite the complexities of Jagger’s personal life, his relationship with Hamrick remains stable, with the couple maintaining a sense of balance and focus on their family and individual aspirations.
Their enduring partnership, which began more than a decade ago, highlights the importance of personal happiness, mutual support, and living life according to one’s values—free from the judgment of others.
