Sahar Tabar, a young Iranian woman, became a global sensation after attempting a dramatic transformation to resemble Hollywood’s Angelina Jolie. Her numerous cosmetic surgeries, including liposuction and nose reshaping, sparked both fascination and controversy. Known officially as Fatemeh Khishvand, Sahar’s bold pursuit of a striking new look earned her the nickname “Iran’s Zombie Angelina Jolie” and ultimately led to a 10-year prison sentence.

The Rise of the “Zombie Jolie”

At just 19 years old, Sahar reportedly underwent over 50 cosmetic procedures to alter her appearance. Though she never directly claimed to want to look like Angelina Jolie, her dramatic transformation, which she frequently posted on social media, led followers to draw the comparison. With a gaunt face, sharp features, and noticeable changes to her lips and nose, Sahar’s photos captivated a large online audience. However, many speculated that her images were digitally altered, fueling doubts about the authenticity of her transformation.

Sahar’s social media presence grew rapidly, and at its peak, her Instagram account (@sahartabar_official) amassed nearly four million followers. Despite her mother’s disapproval, Sahar found solace and recognition in the online world. “Cyberspace was an easy way,” she explained, suggesting it was simpler than trying to build a career in acting.

Behind the Transformation: Self-Expression and Misunderstandings

In an interview with Russian news outlet Sputnik, Sahar shared her perspective on her dramatic appearance. “Whenever I release a photo, I playfully paint my face. It’s a form of self-expression, crafting my own version of art,” she said. Sahar clarified that her intention was never to mimic Angelina Jolie or appear like the Corpse Bride, but rather to create a version of herself. “I am my muse,” she stated, emphasizing that comparisons to other celebrities were not her aim.

However, her online presence, which showcased heavily altered images, created confusion and led to misunderstandings about her true intentions. Despite her clarifications, the discourse surrounding her transformations grew, and it wasn’t long before her actions caught the attention of Iranian authorities.

    The Arrest and 10-Year Sentence

In October 2019, Sahar was arrested and charged with posting “blasphemous” images on Instagram. She was also accused of illegal activities, promoting public disorder, influencing youth negatively, earning money through improper channels, and defying Iran’s strict dress code for women. Sahar’s sentence of 10 years was served at Qarchak Prison, infamous for its harsh conditions, particularly for female prisoners.

Her arrest and imprisonment sparked outrage, both in Iran and internationally, and drew attention to the restrictive policies affecting women in the country. Sahar’s case became a symbol of the clash between personal expression and the stringent laws of her homeland.

A Call for Support and Release

Sahar’s plight reached the attention of Iranian activist Masih Alinejad, who took to social media to call for her release. Alinejad pleaded for international support, including from Angelina Jolie herself. “Sahar Tabar is a mere 19. Her antics have unjustly landed her behind bars. Her mother weeps daily, yearning for her daughter’s freedom. Angelina Jolie, we need your support,” she wrote.

After enduring 14 months in prison, Sahar was released, a decision that came shortly after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini. Amini had died following her arrest for violating Iran’s hijab law, an incident that sparked widespread protests and drew international attention to the treatment of women in Iran.

Sahar’s story, from internet sensation to prisoner, highlights the complex intersection of self-expression, social media, and the severe consequences of challenging societal norms in a repressive environment. Her journey serves as a reminder of the risks individuals face when pushing boundaries in societies with strict cultural and legal frameworks.
