Jo Ann Ussery’s story began in 1993 when her life took an unexpected turn. After losing her husband, Ussery and her two children were left without a place to live. Struggling financially, her initial plan was to purchase a trailer as a solution to their housing needs. But when she realized that she couldn’t afford a home large enough for her family, an unconventional idea was proposed by her brother-in-law, Bob, an air traffic controller—living on a plane.
Intrigued by the idea, Ussery went to see a disassembled Boeing 727. She was immediately taken by the aircraft and saw its potential as a home. The best part? The plane only cost $2,000, including shipping. Ussery, inspired by the fact that Donald Trump also owned a private Boeing 727, decided to name her new acquisition “Little Trump.”
With her vision in mind, Ussery set out to transform the plane into a fully functional and unique home. For less than $30,000 (around $60,000 today), she embarked on a massive renovation project that required both time and financial investment.
A Groundbreaking Renovation Project
The task of turning a Boeing 727 into a home was not a simple feat. Ussery had to ensure the plane’s stability, so she strategically landed it on her property, facing a serene lake, and secured the tail with concrete. With the foundation in place, she began to dismantle the interior, which spanned a spacious 1,500 square feet.
The aircraft, originally designed to accommodate passengers, featured 76 windows and stretched nearly 138 feet long, providing plenty of natural light. Ussery worked diligently to modify the interior, replacing the non-functional windows and focusing on insulation improvements. She also installed new flooring throughout and repurposed the plane’s bathroom and overhead bins for storage, making the most of every available inch.
Creating a Comfortable and Unique Living Space
Once the major structural renovations were complete, Ussery turned her attention to creating a functional and cozy living environment. The result was a remarkable home with three bedrooms, a cozy living room, a fully operational kitchen, and even a laundry facility. However, Ussery didn’t stop at the basics. She incorporated unexpected luxuries such as a phone and an oven, ensuring her new home had everything her family needed.
The highlight of the design was the master bathroom, which was cleverly located in the cockpit. Ussery transformed the cockpit into a lavish space with a soaking tub, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Every detail of the layout was thoughtfully planned so that anyone entering the room would feel as though they were floating on water.
What truly sets Ussery’s transformation apart is that she did it all on her own. Between 1995 and 1999, she and her children lived aboard their converted plane, fully immersed in the comfort of their one-of-a-kind home.
A Legacy of Inspiration
The success of Ussery’s Boeing 727 home didn’t go unnoticed. Eventually, she decided to share her extraordinary creation with the world by converting it into a public museum. Sadly, a mishap during the process of moving the plane caused it to slip off its carriage, leading to its disintegration. Though the physical aircraft no longer exists, its legacy continues to captivate and inspire.
