My Son and His Wife Criticized My Red Lipstick. I Taught Them a Lesson

At seventy-five, many people expect to start slowing down and conform to the typical societal expectations of aging. However, I’ve never been one to follow conventional norms. I’ve always believed in living life fully and joyfully, regardless of my age. For me, the key to staying vibrant is embracing the things that bring me joy, such as my red lipstick. A splash of “Ruby Flame” isn’t just makeup; it’s a reflection of the boldness I’ve carried throughout my life. But recently, my son and his wife seemed to think that such boldness didn’t belong at my age.

    A Hurtful Encounter

The tension began one evening as I was preparing for a family dinner. I wasn’t particularly excited about the gathering, but I decided to put on my favorite red lipstick to brighten my mood. As I carefully applied the shade, my son Stephen walked into the room. His comment, “Mom, you look like an old clown trying to cling to your youth,” struck me like a slap in the face. Although he said it with a smile, the words stung deeply. Did he not understand how hurtful that was? Before I could process his remark, his wife Sarah joined him, also dismissing my choice. “Older women shouldn’t wear red lipstick,” she said, reinforcing the idea that I should conform to how others my age were expected to look.

    Standing My Ground

It would have been easy to feel ashamed and remove my lipstick, but instead, I decided to stand up for myself. I replied firmly, “Honey, why don’t you mind your own business?” The shock on Sarah’s face was palpable, and Stephen seemed unsure of how to respond. But I wasn’t going to let them dictate how I should live my life. Although their mocking comments continued, I was resolute. This wasn’t just about the lipstick; it was about my right to embrace my individuality, no matter what others thought.

Making a Statement at the Block Party

The more I thought about their dismissive remarks, the more determined I became to make a statement. I decided to show them that my confidence and boldness were here to stay. The neighborhood’s annual block party was approaching, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. There was a costume contest, a talent show, and even a parade. I knew exactly what I needed to do. Over the next few days, I visited craft stores and dug through my closet to gather everything I needed for my bold statement.

When the day of the party arrived, I was ready. I wore a stunning red dress that flattered my figure, paired with a flamboyant red hat adorned with a feather, and, of course, my signature red lipstick. I added bold blush and eyeliner to complete the look. As I walked down the street, I saw Stephen and Sarah chatting with neighbors, unaware of the surprise I had in store for them.

    The Unexpected Lesson

Stephen’s face lit up when he saw me, but that quickly turned to shock when he took in my extravagant outfit. Sarah couldn’t hide her disbelief and asked, “Edith, what are you wearing?” With a cool smile, I replied, “Oh, nothing special, just my little project. Decided to embrace that ‘clown’ look you mentioned.” When Stephen tried to offer an awkward compliment, I simply thanked him. Then, the parade began, and I joined the procession as the grand marshal. The crowd cheered as I waved and blew kisses, leaving Stephen and Sarah both embarrassed and in awe.

After the parade, I joined them at the punch bowl, and it was clear they were feeling uneasy. I took the opportunity to offer them a lesson I hoped they would remember: “Life is too short to live by others’ rules. Be it lipstick or a red dress, I’ll wear what brings joy. If that offends someone, it’s their problem, not mine.”

Stephen and Sarah’s reactions softened. Stephen admitted, “Mom, we’re sorry. We didn’t mean to hurt you. We spoke without thinking.” Sarah added, “You’re right, Edith. I’m sorry for my remarks. I hadn’t realized what the lipstick meant to you.” Their sincerity meant a lot, but I made sure to remind them, “It’s not just the lipstick. It’s about staying true to oneself against all odds. One day you’ll understand.”

By the end of the day, my son and his wife seemed more thoughtful, perhaps realizing that confidence and self-expression are not bound by age.
