Parton’s childhood was spent in a one-room cabin near the Little Pigeon River, where space was limited and outdoor activities became a way of life. She has recalled how she did not see an indoor toilet until she was eight years old, and when she first encountered one at her aunt’s house, she was terrified it might “suck them right down.” Growing up in such conditions, the family had to be resourceful, making their own soap and bathing only once a week during the winter months. However, as Parton reached high school, she had to wash every day due to sleeping arrangements with her siblings, one of whom would frequently wet the bed.
