Richard, excited to celebrate his eightieth birthday with his daughter Deidre, nervously tapped the steering wheel as he drove to her house. The distance between them had grown since his wife’s passing four years ago. While they once shared Thanksgiving together, now their relationship was limited to weekly phone calls. As he arrived at her doorstep, he hoped to surprise her with a visit.
With arms wide open, Richard greeted Deidre with a cheerful “Surprise!” However, her response was far from what he expected. Tearfully, Deidre stood at the doorway. “Dad? What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice heavy with emotion.

Deidre, wiping her tears, offered a forced smile. “It’s nothing; everything’s fine,” she insisted. But her words felt hollow. She hurriedly added, “This isn’t really a good time. I need to focus on my work. Look, I’ll call you, and we’ll have dinner later, okay? Sorry, Dad.” With that, she shut the door, leaving Richard standing outside, confused and hurt.
A Father’s Instinct
Richard’s heart sank as he walked away from the door. Something was terribly wrong, and his gut told him that Deidre wasn’t being honest about her well-being. Instead of leaving, he decided to investigate further. Richard carefully stepped over the flower-lined shrubs and peered through her windows, hoping to catch a glimpse of what was really going on inside.
